Provide technical and managerial leadership to direct reports in the overall performance of the shop ensuring safety, quality and on time delivery.
Read, interpret and clarify with direct reports on engineering drawings, welding symbols, welding procedure specifications (WPS), PWHT, NDE, and job routing.
Scope out work to prioritize urgency, ensuring materials, consumables and other resources are available to meet scheduled completion and within target hours. Create efficient workflows and processes and ensure completeness of work according to specifications.
Ensure shop leaders are familiar with the WPS and welders are qualified for the work they are doing.
Perform weld defect analysis to improve the quality of welds. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives as required.
Monitor performance and correct deficiencies so that production targets are met, with consistent quality in meeting customer requirements.
Investigate non-conformances and initiate corrective action to prevent recurrence. Assist QA in the disposition of NCR as required.
Liaise and coordinate with other departments to fine tune internal issues so that foreseeable production delays could be reduced or eliminated.
Provide leadership to monitor the performance of machines, welding equipment, lifting equipment, power lines, gas lines, forklifts, cranes and other related equipment so that these are maintained in tip-top condition to ensure their availability to meet production needs at all times.
Evaluate and recommend the selection and acquisition of new capital equipment and/or the use of new materials and processes to enhance productivity to improve competitiveness.
Establish and control budget and staffing; provide details of variance analysis; assist Sales or Estimation with manufacturing costs.
Train and guide workers on safety in the Fabrication Shop, housekeeping, defect deduction, and other productivity improvement initiatives. Ensure attendance at all compulsory training and medical checks.
Attend to customers’ visit as required and act as the technical liaison between the Company and the visitors on questions relating to welding and material issues.
Monitor and enforce compliance with all applicable quality, health, safety, and environment rules and regulations.
Perform all other duties as may be assigned.
Job Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Material Science, Metallurgical or Welding Engineering, or equivalent
At least 5 years relevant experience in heavy manufacturing environment, preferably in fabrication/welding or engineering construction; background in oil and gas or shipbuilding industry would be advantageous
AWS certified welding inspector or equivalent will be advantageous
Good knowledge of WPS, welding symbols, non-destructive examination (NDE), post-weld heat treatment (PWHT).
Knowledge of common structural steel in use in O&G industry, their performance and limitations.
